Water Safety

Good afternoon residents of Headland and Harbour.

The weather has been quite Humid over the past week and there is nothing more tempting than to go into the sea to cool down.  Please be aware of the tides and undercurrents when entering the sea. be safe and be aware of cold water shock.

What Happens during cold water shock.

Initial Gasp Reflex  - the sudden immersion in cold water triggers and involuntary gasp, potentially leading to inhaling water.

Rapid Breathing  (hyperventilation) -  breathing rate can increase dramatically potentially tenfold, making it difficult to control.

Increased blood pressure and Heart rate. -  The body attempts to conserve heat by constricting blood vessels. which can strain the heart and increase blood pressure potentially causing a heart attack.

Reduced strength and coordination - Muscles become weaker and the ability to swim is impaired making it difficult to stay afloat

What to do if you get into difficulty !!!!

Fight the instinct to to swim hard.

Control your breathing

Get out or signal for help.
