Keep Cool, stay secure: Keep your vehicle safe during warm weather

Dear Resident,

The warmer weather is here, and it can be tempting to leave your car windows cracked or the sunroof open while you nip into the shops or visit family—but that quick moment is all it takes for a thief to strike.

We’re advising our local residents to take a moment to protect what matters. We often see a rise in theft of motor vehicles across the West Midlands over the summer months.

Before walking away from your vehicle, make sure it’s locked. It may sound simple, but it’s one of the most effective ways to prevent theft. Park in well-lit areas or in a Park Mark-accredited car park if you can, and always aim to park near CCTV.

Heading to the retail parks? Don’t leave your windows down or valuables inside your vehicle. That includes mobile phones, handbags, designer gear, or even loose change—all of it can catch the eye of an opportunist thief.

You can boost your security further with a steering lock or immobiliser, and if your car is 4 to 6 years old, check with the main dealer to ensure it has the latest security updates.

If you're visiting family this weekend, park your car on a driveway or somewhere clearly visible. Keep your keys in a signal-blocking pouch and out of view—an open window or unlocked door can be an open invitation.

Getting out on your motorbike or bicycle? Secure them properly using a heavy-duty chain or D-lock, ideally through two parts of the frame to make it harder to steal.

For those working during the warmer weather, keep your tools—and your van—safe. If you’re stepping away, take your valuables with you, lock the van, and never leave it unattended with the doors open.
