Dear Residents, I hope this message finds you well. I’m writing today to raise awareness about a growing issue affecting individuals across our community: scam calls and text messages. These scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated and can catch anyone off guard—regardless of age, background, or tech knowledge.
🚨 What Are Scam Calls and Messages?Scam calls and messages are fraudulent attempts by criminals to trick you into providing personal information, bank details, or access to your devices or accounts. They often pretend to be from: Banks or financial institutionsDelivery companies (e.g., claiming a package couldn't be delivered)Government bodies like HMRC or the policeTech support companiesFamily members or friends in distress
🔍 Common Signs of a ScamUrgent tone: They pressure you to act quickly (“You’ll be arrested if you don’t pay!”).Unknown number or withheld caller ID.Links in text messages that ask for payment or personal info.Requests for bank details or to transfer money.Poor spelling or grammar in messages.Too good to be true offers (e.g., lottery wins you never entered).
✅ What You Should DoHang up or delete the message – Don’t engage with the caller or click any links.Never give out personal information – Even if they claim to be from a trusted organisation.Report the scam:- Call 159 if you think someone is trying to scam you (bank scam reporting line).
- Forward suspicious texts to 7726 (free reporting service).
- Report phishing emails to report@phishing.gov.uk
Speak to someone you trust – If something feels off, it probably is.Contact your bank immediately if you think you've shared sensitive information or made a payment.
🛡️ Protect YourselfInstall call-blocking apps or enable spam filters on your phone (this can be done via your telephone / landline provider)Keep your devices and software up to date.Use strong, unique passwords and enable two-factor authentication.Never allow remote access to your devices unless you're sure who you’re dealing with.If you do become victim to a scam please report it to Action Fraud via (Action Fraud)
