E-Bikes – Anti-Social Behaviour Hamble, Netley and Bursledon
We are reaching out to the community to assist us with an issue of young people using e-bikes, Suron Electric bikes and other models, in the Hamble and Netley areas of our community. The riders have been riding these vehicles without regard for pedestrians or other road users. On Friday last week one of these E-Bikes was riding behind a Police vehicle, doing wheelies on the wrong side of the road and on the pavements. These e-bikes are a challenge for Police officers to tackle because of the high risks involved in pursuing them and unseating riders. We must balance the risk to everyone and the offences committed. In the example above we weren’t prepared to put anyone at risk of death or serious injury for a couple of wheelies.
We reach out to the community for assistance and support. Dash Cam video of these riders in action, mobile phone video and CCTV are very helpful tools for gathering evidence without the risk to all in chasing them. If you feel safe to do so and can capture these offenders on video we can use this to prosecute and to seize vehicles to stop them committing these offences. With your assistance we can use the images to make further appeals for information. Why are we asking for your help with these incidents? Death and serious injury involving electric bikes across the UK is rising. E-bike enabled crime is being seen across the country. We don’t want these vehicles to be used in our community putting people at risk or committing crime. People who live and work in our community are more likely to capture images of offenders when they least expect it. This is by far the safest and best option to bring these offenders to justice.
Electric bikes (not electrically assisted pedal bikes) are classed as motor vehicle. Like e-scooter, require a driving licence and Insurance among other requirements. Offenders identified can expect seizure of the E-bike and prosecution with fines, penalty points on driving licences or a disqualification and the chance of imprisonment.
If you can support your Local Neighbourhood Officer with any visually recorded evidence or information about who these offenders are and where they store the bikes, please drop me an email. My details can be found on the Hampshire Police website or the Police and Crime Commissioners’ website.
