Hot Weather Warning

Dear resident,

As the weather warms up, we are urging residents to be aware of the dangers of leaving pets in hot cars. High temperatures can quickly become fatal for pets, even on seemingly mild days. Dogs lose heat through panting and only sweat through their paws.

They are at high risk of getting heatstroke so it is vital that owners take measures to keep them safe.

Please follow the following advice from RSPCA.

Never leave dogs in cars or other vehicles, caravans, conservatories or outbuildings in warm weather, even if only for a short while. When it's 22°C (76°F) outside, temperatures can quickly rise to 47°C (117°F) in these environments, which can be fatal.

  • Make sure there's plenty of water available for your furry friends
  • Never leave your dog (or any pet) alone in a car – even with the windows open
  • Avoid exercising your dog during the heat of the day. If it's very warm or if your dog struggles in the heat, avoid taking them for a walk altogether.
  • Small pets will also need plenty of shade and may benefit from being brought indoors in the hot weather
  • Animals can suffer fatal heatstroke within minutes. Obvious signs of heatstroke include collapse, excessive panting or breathing heavily, and dribbling. If you suspect your animal is suffering, remove them to a cool place, wet their coat and contact a vet immediately. Avoid overcooling – especially small pets.
  • You should call 999 if you witness a dog or dogs alone inside a vehicle in immediate danger or 101 for non emergency.
