News From beat to bike seat: GMP launch dedicated Motorbike Unit

Our Specialist Operations Branch has added another unit to its arsenal as a dedicated motorbike team has taken to the streets in recent months.

The specialist unit will focus on improving road safety, reducing traffic-related crime, and providing enhanced response capabilities in urban and challenging terrain environments across the region.

There will be two dedicated teams of officers which are led by two Sergeants and an Inspector and are based out of Eccles Police Station in Salford.

Officers will be deployed across all 10 boroughs of Greater Manchester and will conduct a number of enhanced traffic enforcement operations, targeting dangerous drivers, and will provide rapid response capabilities in areas where traditional patrol vehicles face access challenges.

Additionally, the newly formed Unit will enable officers to pursue and intercept motorbikes, illegal e-bikes and quadbikes causing anti-social behaviour across the Force in an operation that was created in 2024.

They will also be working closely with existing units in the Specialist Operation Branch, including the Roads Policing Unit, Tactical Vehicle Intercept Unit and Neighbourhoods Policing Teams.
