Theft of garden tools |
||
There has recently been an increase in theft of garden tools on the area. We would like to remind people of the following advice to try and prevent being the next victim.
Focus on physical deterrents like secure fencing and sturdy shed locks, along with proactive measures like security marking and community watch programs. Consider adding thorny shrubs, trimming overgrown vegetation, and avoiding clutter near the perimeter fence to make it harder for intruders to access your plot.
Here's a more detailed breakdown of security measures:
1. Physical Security:
Fencing: Ensure your perimeter fence is in good condition, without gaps or holes. Consider mesh security fencing, but choose it carefully to avoid harming small animals like hedgehogs. Shed Security: Use strong locks, hasp-and-staple systems, and consider metal sheds as they are more difficult to break into than wooden sheds. Gate Security: Ensure gates are securely screened, especially on the public-facing side, to prevent climbing. Clear Visibility: Avoid dense vegetation that could hide intruders. Trim overgrown trees and shrubs near fencing and gates.
2. Deterrent Measures:
Security Marking: Identify and mark your property with a unique identifier, such as a bright paint marker or a sign warning potential thieves that your property is security-marked and registered on https://www.immobilise.com/register which is a UK national property register. Community Watch: Participate in local allotment watch schemes, which can help deter crime and facilitate information sharing among allotment holders.
3. Preventative Measures:
Keep valuable items out of sight: Take valuable equipment home with you, or store it securely in a shed.
Do not leave valuables in your vehicle overnight. If you are unable to remove all items try and make sure that the vehicle is securely parked in a locked garage or in a well lit street. Consider getting a dash cam that will work when your vehicle is parked.
4. Additional Tips:
Consider security lighting: Install lights around your shed and plot to deter potential thieves. Use an alarm system: Engage with neighbours: Building a community of allotment holders can help deter crime and increase awareness of potential threats. Report suspicious activity: Report any suspicious behaviour, theft, or vandalism to the police.
We also recommend secured by design which are police approved security products .
