On the frontline working around the clock 24/7 to drive down burglary

National statistics show that burglaries are more likely to occur in the Summer due to people leaving their homes unoccupied for longer, windows open or ajar and doors unlocked.

As part of our commitment to reducing the number of burglaries in North Yorkshire various departments within North Yorkshire Police are working collaboratively around the clock to intercept offenders and bring them to justice.

Burglars often operate in vehicles on the road network after the hours of darkness. Every night as dusk falls our team of specialist operations strategically deploy to all corners of the county with focused patrols and increased vehicle checks. Deploying in marked and unmarked vehicles officers work closely with ANPR colleagues in the control room to disrupt criminals.

Our team are primed to deploy to any suspicious incidents which is why it is vital that the public continue to be our eyes and ears. If something doesn’t look right, especially after dark, then members of the public should report this to the police on 999. If the crime has already happened and the suspect has gone, call 101 or report online via our website.

Last night, shortly after midnight officers sighted a vehicle travelling at speed on the A629 near Skipton. It made a sharp turn as a pursuit commenced through the village of Sutton-in-Craven before officers lost sight of it. Minutes later members of the public reported on 999 that a vehicle had crashed into a wall, the police helicopter (NPAS) was scrambled and as it hovered overhead one person presented themselves in front of one of our officers. We were grateful for the assistance of two members of the public who helped with locating a second suspect. A man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, driving with no license or insurance. A second man who is also in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, drug driving, driving under the influence of alcohol and failing to stop for the police.

They currently remain in police custody.

At 02.50am officers attempted to stop a vehicle in the Tadcaster area before it made off at speed. An area search commenced but there were no further sightings. Enquiries are continuing to locate the vehicle.

Throughout the night there were several other reports of suspicious incidents where vehicles or people were seen in or around property.

Our neighbourhood officers continue to support our disruptive teams by working with residents in local communities to prevent offending. You can help us by keeping your home safe – keep doors locked, even if you’re home, use any additional security on your house, don’t leave valuables on view and when you go out, simply leaving a light on is an easy way to deter burglars.

Neighbourhood officers continue to be our eyes and ears within our local communities, they pass information to our Intelligence Unit who on a daily basis collate, analyses and disseminate patrol plans to our proactive teams on the frontline.

Our Local Policing lead, Chief Superintendent Fiona Willey from North Yorkshire Police said: “Although we have seen a decrease in the number of burglaries year on year, continuing to target and disrupt those responsible remains a key priority for us.

“Our message to the public is please do not become complacent, although North Yorkshire remains one of the safest places in the country, opportunist criminals do operate here.

“You can help us by remaining vigilant and reporting suspicious behaviour in your area on 999, 101 or the force website.

“Working together we will continue to make North Yorkshire a hostile environment for criminals to commit crime.”

PC Jack Dodsworth from the Roads Policing Group added: "Night in, night out we are deployed on the road network to intercept travelling criminality.

“Last night alone I clocked up over 250 miles deploying predominantly in the west of the county. A pursuit which I commanded led to the arrests of two suspects and I’m confident that our high visibility presence helped deter criminals from operating here.

“We remain absolutely committed to working with neighbouring forces to pursue offenders and, together, we will continue to make North Yorkshire the safest place to live, work, and visit.”
