Celebrating National Volunteers Week

Dear Resident,

It’s National Volunteers Week and we’re celebrating the incredible people who give up their time to support policing and help keep communities across the West Midlands safe.

From Special Constables working alongside officers on the frontline, to Police Cadets making a difference in their communities, and StreetWatch volunteers helping keep an eye on local areas, our volunteers are making a real impact every single day.

So far this year, our Special Constables have already volunteered over 17,000 hours, supporting our policing teams to tackle crime and protect communities.

These volunteer police officers balance their roles alongside their daily lives and busy careers, wearing the same uniform and holding the same powers as regular officers.

We also have many Police Support Volunteers working behind the scenes in various departments across the force including the Museum, Forensics, Custody, Chaplaincy, Dog Unit, through to the Economic Crime Unit to mention just a few, helping to keep everything running smoothly.

Our Police Cadets and Leaders play an important role too, learning about policing while getting involved in community events and activities that give them valuable skills and experiences.

In total we have 323 volunteers, with an additional 181 Special Constables and 80 Cadets Leaders.

This week, we’ll be sharing inspiring stories from our volunteers about what they love most about their roles - so keep an eye on our channels for more!

Helen Fenton, head of our Citizens in Policing Team, shared her appreciation: “Volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. Their dedication, time, and passion make a huge difference not just to policing, but to the communities they serve. Every hour they give helps us connect with more people, tackle more crime, and create safer, stronger neighbourhoods.

“Our volunteers bring fresh ideas, unique skills, and a real drive to make a change. Whether it’s Special Constables working alongside officers, Police Support Volunteers helping behind the scenes, or Cadet Leaders inspiring young people, they play an invaluable role in shaping the future of policing.

“We are grateful for every single volunteer who gives their time to support others. If you’ve ever thought about getting involved, now is the perfect time. Your time and skills could change lives.”
