Epsom Derby 2025: one week to go

There’s just one week to go until this year’s Epsom Derby.

Surrey Police support the safe running of the Epsom Derby each year, which is organised and managed by The Jockey Club.

We are aware this event can cause some disruption for local residents, and a key part of our role in supporting the smooth running of the Derby is to help minimise that impact on you.

Across the weekend you will see police officers and staff working, not only at the racecourse itself, but on the roads around the perimeter and into Epsom town centre, Walton Downs, and Langley Vale.

Officers will be patrolling on foot and providing a rapid response to any reports of violent crime or antisocial behaviour in the town centre.

Our Roads Policing Unit will be running Operation Limit; a drink and drug drive initiative that usually operates over Christmas, but which will be returning for the Derby weekend to tackle any potential drink and drug driving offences in the area and keep Epsom’s roads safe.

In addition to their regular duties, Epsom and Ewell Safer Neighbourhood Team will also be conducting proactive patrols in Langley Vale every day in the week leading up to this year’s Derby, following reports of criminal damage in the area before last year’s event.

Inspector Tommy Pearson, Borough Commander for Epsom and Ewell, has also authorised a Section 35 Dispersal Order to run throughout the Derby weekend. The order covers all of Epsom, Walton Downs, and Langley Vale from 10am on Friday, 6 June to 6am on Sunday, 8 June.

The Dispersal Order is granted under the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014 and authorised by an inspector. It gives police officers and PCSOs the power to remove individuals from a specified area where their behaviour is contributing, or likely to contribute, to anti-social behaviour, crime and disorder. This includes behaviour that causes other members of the public alarm or distress, and a person can be excluded for up to 48 hours.

Inspector Pearson said: “This dispersal order is a helpful tool that will enable us to tackle anti-social behaviour in the Epsom, Walton Downs, and Langley Vale areas across the two days of the Epsom Derby.

“The safety of those who live, work, and socialise in Epsom is our top priority, and officers will be out patrolling the town centre and surrounding areas across the weekend to ensure those attending the Derby enjoy the event, and to keep disruption through anti-social behaviour to a minimum. If you have any concerns, please speak to one of our officers.”

A Public Spaces Protection Order is already in place across the entire borough of Epsom and Ewell until 2028. This prohibits, among other acts, drinking alcohol in public spaces and wearing clothing which intentionally obscures or hides a person’s identity for the purposes of committing crime and/or anti-social behaviour.

We urge residents to continue reporting any incidents of anti-social behaviour to us through private message on social media or on our website: https://www.surrey.police.uk/ro/report/asb/asb-v3/report-antisocial-behaviour/

In an emergency, always call 999.
