Weekly Message - 20/25

Freeman Chris J - AS-CU

PC

Last week the UK came together in recognition of VE Day, and paused to honour the extraordinary courage and sacrifice of those who served during the Second World War. Victory in Europe Day marked the end of the devastating conflict but it also symbolised the strength of unity, service and resilience in the face of adversity.

A lot of our officers were called to support these celebrations both locally and in Central London, and whilst watching the events, it occurred to me that we carry these values with us in policing today.  Just as communities stood together then, we too now work side – by – side to keep people safe in times that present unprecedented challenges to us in the Met.  For me it is a powerful reminded that we are part of something bigger, a policing family who proudly span generations.

In this week’s newsletter we have stories that celebrate not just our past, but the positive difference we are making today, from outstanding operational work to community engagements and acts of quiet bravery across the BCU.

Thank you for all your hard work and efforts which continue to make our BCU a great place to work.

A Letter of thanks to ERPT Team (West)

Dear Inspector Sargeant,

We wanted to convey our gratitude to you and your team for the kindness, compassion and professionalism that Lester experienced on the evening of October 24th 2024.

Tragically, Lester's son, Jay-Ashley Fieldmartin, took his life and was discovered by his close friend Colin, who then alerted the police. By the time Lester arrived, the police had been with Jay for approximately 25 minutes, and needed to manage a very difficult situation with care.

During the course of the evening, the Police Constables showed warmth, consideration, sympathy and above all professionalism which has stayed with Lester ever since. They treated Jay with dignity and respect, and they supported Lester to process the very traumatic situation with which he was faced. This approach was very much concerned with ensuring Lester's wellbeing was looked after. It is in our opinion that the officers went above and beyond in their roles. They ensured that Lester was able to spend some essential time with his son and made sure got safely back to a hotel.

The PC's involved on the evening of the 24th were:

Sarah Jackson

Caitlin Harris

Lauren Rawlinson

Olivia Jay

If there were any other officers involved that night please ensure our thanks, and this email, are shared with them.

In addition, the ongoing support of PC Sarah Jackson and PC Caitlin Harris has been a comfort. PC Jackson has promptly replied to emails and requests for information. Furthermore, due to Lester having gaps in his memory of the events of that evening, PC Jackson and PC Harris agreed to meet with us both to help him recall what had happened. We met last week and this meeting proved both comforting and cathartic, and the kindness, compassion and professionalism that Lester experienced on the evening of the 24th was again displayed.

Once again, thank you very much to you and your team. Please can you ensure that our gratitude is passed on to everyone concerned?

Kind regards,

Gill and Lester Martin

Fantastic Job by ERPT Team C (West)

C team West were patrolling the SE1 postcode of Lambeth in response to a spate of E-Bike enabled robberies and theft snatch offences whereby suspects had stolen phones from victims.

PC Hyland, who had personally taken care of a multiple aforementioned victims, noticed that the phones were still tracking locally. PC Hyland and Dixon were able to communicate the live location updates to colleagues on the team who were also in the area. Several sightings of the suspects on the e-bikes around the area led to several foot chases but unfortunately, the riders were able to evade officers.

PC Hyland had spotted the bikes loitering in green space around the Imperial war museum. This together with tracking data from the stolen phones showing activity in this area, PC's Hyland and Dixon decided to stay in the vicinity covertly believing they may be stashing the phones and may return either to deposit more or return at the end of their spree to retrieve them.

Around an hour later PC Hyland spotted torchlights within the green area, upon investigating, 2 males ran off and into a waiting cab. Luckily, the cab driver was an innocent party and PC Dixon was able to signal for him to stop. PC Hyland went to detain the two suspects in the back of the cab, a struggle ensued and PC Hyland's excellent work ensured they did not escape. Other officers then quickly joined him and arrested the males.

19 phones were recovered, an estimated value of over £20000 and a knife.

The Team identified the victims and reunited them with their mobile phones within an hour.  Many of which were foreign tourists, enjoying the South Bank when targeted by the suspects.

Both suspects were under 18 and were on bail for similar offences. They were both charged with a 25 offences. Despite being under 18 they were both remanded at youth court due to a combined effort from response team officers and CID who took the case to CPS.

A quote from DS Ben Sage- AS CID who praised the actions of PC Hyland and Dixon:

As a result of your team’s hard work, on Tuesday night/Wednesday early hours Emmanuel Maitland and Carlito Howell were charged last night by my team with 25 offences between them  for offences ranging from a linked series of Theft snatches and possessing knives. Despite being youths, they were RIC based on the danger they pose.

These two were clearly committing offences all evening and would be on a daily basis. Their arrest prevented many people falling victim to victim on our BCU.

A Multi-Agencies Operation (Operation Jumbo)

Early morning on 1st May, Police Officers from the Central South Gangs Unit, supported by the proactive crime team, victim navigators from Justice & Care, Southwark Council, Home Office Immigration Enforcement and police colleagues from Specialist Crime conducted an operation on the Aylesbury Estate in Walworth SE1.

The purpose of this activity was to target an Organised Crime Group suspected to be responsible for weapon-enabled violence, drug supply, human trafficking and forced prostitution.

In simultaneous dawn raids a total of:

  • 11 premises were searched.

  • Several vulnerable people were safeguarded.

  • 5 people were arrested for a variety of offences including burglary, immigration matters and controlled drugs.

Detective Inspector Jon Summers who led the operation said, ‘Todays police activity has been months in the planning. I am immensely proud of the professionalism and dedication of my officers. This was a real joint effort between multiple partners to achieve a safe, effective outcome. The gang’s strangle hold on this estate has been significantly weakened. Whilst the fight against gang violence remains ongoing, I hope our presence and actions today serve to reassure the public that the MPS are here, on the streets of London confronting those who would do our communities harm.’

Excellent Proactive work by ERPT Team C (East)

On SATURDAY 3RDMAY 2025 officers attended victims address after they contacted police stating their moped had been stolen from outside their home address. PC KYPRIAN 3188AS, PC ETOR-HALL 3325AS and PC SALT 3355AS (AS21L) attended the victims home address, contacted the tracking company and were able to obtain a live track of the stolen moped which showed on the SURREY CANAL PATH SE14 within BRIDGEHOUSE MEADOWS between ROLLINS STREET and MYERS LANE.

Other units assisted in creating a containment around the suspect. PC MORGAN 2510AS, PC SCOTT 1252AS (AS22L) and a traffic unit positioned themselves within the SURREY CANAL ROAD and MYERS lane vicinity. PC PETO 3394AS and PC HOWTON 2640AS (AS110L) have then spotted a moped on false plates.  They circulated this and linked the two call together.AS110L have then entered the canal path and spotted the suspect in possession of the victims stolen moped.

The suspect has then drove in the direction of officers in which PC HOWTON 2640AS discharged their Taser and apprehended the suspect, arresting them for theft of motor vehicle.

Great Cross-Strand working to take a repeat High-Harm Domestic Offender off the street.

Excellent work by B Team East and Safeguarding Team 2. A female was kidnapped by their ex-partner and was quickly driven away from the scene without trace. With just a VRM and a first name for the victim, Response and Safeguarding worked together on locating the parties through extensive enquiries and intelligence checks. Within the space of a few hours, officers were able to establish an address; finding both parties and arrested the suspect. The victim was against any prosecution but with empathy and hours of patience, PC Floyd took a detailed statement and the suspect was charged with kidnap, rape and assault.

Professional and Compassion by NPT Officers

Professionalism and compassion shown by PC Richard Holmes (Nunhead & Queens Road SNT) and PC Ben Strickland (Peckham SNT) while on Aid for the BAFTA awards on the South Bank. While taking their refs they were alerted by a member of the public to a woman who had climbed over the railings and up a lamp post to jump into the river and end her life. In front of a large crowd of onlookers the officers sprung into action to engage with her, develop a rapport and coax her back over the railings to safety where she was then sectioned. It transpired that she had recently been discharged from hospital after lifesaving surgery and had previously tried to cut her neck.

Great proactivity and courage displayed by Officers

Great proactivity and courage displayed by PC Megan Cochrane, PCSO Juliana Alake & PCSO Danny Cloud  (Camberwell Green SNT) supported by PC Tanveer Kalsi (Faraday SNT). Following local intel they intercepted a man who was suspected of drug dealing on a local estate.  When officers tried to handcuff him to be searched he broke free, discarded a bag containing 50 wraps of cocaine and pushed a PCSO out of the way in order to make off.  Prompt Equifax checks by PC Charlie Heffernan (Dulwich Hill SNT) yielded a local address for him and he was arrested by PC Cochrane when he answered the door later that day. A search of the premises found a ball of cocaine and an incriminating mobile phone. DC Amit Karki (CID) led the secondary investigation and he was subsequently charged with PWITS Class A x 2 , Obstructing a Drug Search and Assault On An Emergency Worker. He was remanded for court.

Man sentenced to 19 years following Rape in Clapham

A 28-year-old man has been jailed for rape and sexual offences following a lengthy investigation by the Met Police.

Gabriel Hay (02.01.1997) of Gauden Road, SW4 was sentenced to 19 years in prison on Tuesday, 13 May at Inner London Crown Court.

Hay was found guilty of rape, attempted rape and two counts of sexual assault on Monday, 10 March at the same court. The charges relate to multiple incidents which took place between 2014 and 2023.

In April 2023, Hay met a woman while working at a bar in Clapham. It was here that Hay recommended she and a friend go on drinking at another location – he would join them there. When Hay arrived at the end of his shift, he plied her with alcohol. As a result of this she became unsteady on her feet and he led her out of the bar to his address – a house he shared with his mother – where he raped her.

It was this report of rape that enabled detectives to re-open previously reported incidents that did not initially hold sufficient evidence and bring charges against Hay.

These incidents were a sexual assault in April 2014 in which Hay groped a woman in her 20s at a party in Clapham. He later attempted to rape her at his house in July 2016. Hay also touched another woman without consent in the back of a taxi in south London in 2018.

Detective Sergeant Damian Jones, who let the Met’s investigation, said:

“While nothing can remedy Hay’s horrific crimes, I hope this sentence brings closure to the three women - who have shown such resilience over the last few years – especially during the trial. It is because of them that we secured a conviction.

“This investigation has taken a dangerous individual off our streets. Our officers will continue to tackle violence against women and girls and put victim-survivors at the centre of our work. If you would like to come forward and make a report relating to Hay, you can contact police via 101 quoting 2532/21APR23."

If you live in England or Wales and have been affected by this case and would like to seek independent support from specialist agencies, please contact the charity Rape Crisis via their 24/7 Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Line or call them on 0808 500 2222. Specially trained staff are there to listen, answer questions and offer support.

Great Safeguarding work

On SUNDAY 1st SEPTEMBER 2024, at approximately 0030 hours, in their shared room within a HMO - 47 Seldon Road, SE27, A male suspect accused a female  victim  of sleeping with/cheating with her friend. When the victim denied this, and said they should speak tomorrow, the suspect said 'NO WE WILL TALK TODAY AND TODAY YOU WILL DIE IN MY HANDS BITCH'. He then grabbed her around her neck with both hands, he then said words to the effect of 'THIS SCAR I HAVE IS NOT BECAUSE I AM A GOOD PERSON, I DON'T CARE I WILL KILL YOU'. the suspect then removed one hand, keeping the other around her neck and began to punch her in the head and body. The victim was screaming to her neighbours to do something to help. The suspect pulled her by her neck to the floor, said 'NO I WILL KILL YOU ANYWAYS BECAUSE YOU OFFENDED ME'. The suspect still had his hand round her neck and was also hitting her in the vagina, with an open palm and then grabbing her vagina. He said words to the effect of WHY DID YOU BETRAY THIS OLD MAN WHO FELL IN LOVE SO MUCH, YOU WILL DIE TODAY'. The victim continue to scream for help, at some point during the assault she lost consciousness. The assault stopped when neighbours from within the HMO, witnesses listed below managed to break through the locked door. Neighbours describe the suspect being on top on the victim when they broke through the door. CARILLO states he was holding a knife.

Due to the hard work by TDC Charlotte Lockyer:

The suspect was found guilty at court, the Judge ruled, "Clear to me had they not entered the room, you would have killed her.” Causing serious psychological harm to the victim. That the suspect shown no sign of remorse.  The persistence in attack the Judge found to be particularly disturbing, The judge believe the suspect hold significant risk to any woman you may form a relationship with.

The suspect was sentenced to 25 years, custodial of 20 years, licence period of 5 years.

Minimal serve of 2/3's - 13 years and 4 months before eligible for licence.

with a Restraining order

Not to contact directly / indirectly the victim until further notice

Detectives issue a reward for information following a fatal shooting in Lambeth

A year on from the fatal shooting of a man in Lambeth, detectives have announced a £20,000 reward as they seek justice for his bereaved family.

Detectives from the Met’s Specialist Crime have been leading the investigation into the murder of 26-year-old Jazmel Patterson-Low over the past year.

They hope the offer of this substantial reward will encourage anyone with information to come forward.

Detective Inspector Martin Thorpe said: “It has been a year since the death of Jazmel and we are still actively searching for those involved.

“We want to know what happened that morning on St Rule Street SW8. We know there was a group of around 40 people gathered there on Friday evening and into the early hours of Saturday morning. If you were there, then you may have crucial information for us.

“I am grateful to those who have come forward already, however we still need more from the public. This is why we are now offering a reward of up to £20,000 for information that leads to the successful charge and conviction of the person responsible.

“Think back to last May, did you witness what happened to Jazmel? Do you know who fired the gun? Did you see anyone running from the St Rule Street area? If you know what happened, then you need to speak to us.

“We will support you throughout, you can also contact Crimestoppers to remain anonymous and your identity will be protected. Alliances change over time, so please do the right thing by coming forward.”
