New Canley police base officially opens

Dear Resident,

Coventry’s newest police base has been officially opened by the city’s most senior police officer and the region’s elected Police and Crime Commissioner.

The pair visited the base in Bow Court, Canley yesterday (Thursday 15 May), ahead of a local operation targeting crime and antisocial behaviour.

The new offices are home to the neighbourhood teams who serve the area, 24/7 emergency response officers and a specialist taskforce.

They moved into their new accommodation following the closure of the old Canley police base in March.

They were previously based 640 metres away in a 1960s building which had been publicly listed for closure since 2018. The building’s front office closed almost 15-years ago as people chose reporting issues by phone over visiting a police station.

That site was too big for current needs and required extensive repairs and renovations. This did not offer good value for public money and the best alternative was to find new accommodation.

The team have settled into their new offices quickly and are already making a difference.

A recent patrol by local neighbourhood officers nearby resulted in the arrest of a man found with 14 wraps of heroin, two bags of suspected cannabis, £550 in cash and a ball of what was believed to be crack cocaine worth £10,000.

Elsewhere, a trailer was stolen from a local gardening business. Officers acted on a tip off and were able to return it to the owner.

Following the official opening, Ch Supt Joyce and the PCC joined local officers for Operation Regroup, Coventry Police’s monthly day of intensive activity in crime and antisocial behaviour hotspots.

The day’s operation focused on road safety with 36 vehicles stopped, 25 offences recorded. Including illegal tints, no tax and dangerous tyre defects.

Three people were arrested for driving while disqualified or driving while under the influence of drugs.

Coventry central police station on Little Park Street in the city centre, remains the city’s public contact point where people can talk to us face to face if they prefer that over our telephone and online reporting options.

The old Canley police based has now been sold to a storage company with money from the sale going reinvested into policing.

The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner owns our buildings and makes decisions about their future based on recommendations from the Chief Constable about how we can best use them to deliver a good service.
