Good Afternoon,
We are receiving a lot of reports regarding the use of E-Scooters. So here is a reminder of the current laws and guidance around their use.
Under current legislation the riding of privately owned e-scooters is illegal on roads, pavements, cycle ways and any other public place. If you are caught riding an E-Scooter in a public place then you will have committed road traffic offences (as defined under the Road Traffic Act 1988) and you can be prosecuted as such. In addition to this, your e-scooter will also be seized and crushed.
At the moment, e-scooters are covered by the same legislation as motor vehicles and are subject to all the same legal requirements - MOT, tax, licensing insurance and specific construction regulations.
Some of the potential offences committed can include driving without a valid licence and driving without insurance. The penalty for driving without insurance is a fine of £300 and up to 6 points on your driving licence if you have one. |
