Thieves target diesel in rural areas

Dear Resident,

Officers from the force’s Rural Crime Action Team (RCAT) are offering crime prevention advice after 1,500 litres of diesel was stolen in the past two weeks.

About 200 litres of diesel was stolen from an irrigation pump at a farm in Little London, Isleham, in the space of just 15 minutes on 26 April, between 11pm and 11.15pm. The irrigation pipes were also damaged by a vehicle running over them.

The same farm was struck again last week, with roughly 300 litres of diesel stolen from an irrigation pump between 1am and 1.15am on 4 May.

There were further offences at New Decoy Farm, in Long Drove, Holme, where red diesel was stolen between 25 April and 28 April, and at Bridge Farm, in North Bank, Thorney, where a fuel bowser containing about 1000 litres of red diesel was stolen between 11am and 7pm on 29 April.

Anyone with any information regarding any of the fuel thefts is urged to contact police online.

Fuel theft prevention tips include:

  • Invest in a good quality cap for your fuel tank
  • Conceal fuel tanks and pipes
  • Install fencing around fuel tanks
  • Install an alarm system on the tank that will activate if the levels suddenly drop
  • Do not fill tanks up if they're left outside overnight
  • Do not leave fuel bowsers in full view
  • Install surveillance cameras which can be accessed via an app on your phone
  • Install perimeter alarms around your fuel tanks
  • Invest in security lighting, this could be linked into your alarm system
  • Report suspicious vehicles or people to police, noting descriptions
  •
