Vehicle Related - The Fatal Five

Good afternoon,

The Fatal five: Watch these examples of the behaviours that cause serious collision on the roads 👇

Here in North Yorkshire, we police 6,000 miles of road and we’re determined to reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured on the network.

There are five main contributory factors to road traffic collisions, and road users who commit one of these offences are far more likely to be involved in a serious or fatal collision. The fatal five are:

• Careless driving

• Drink and drug driving

• Not wearing a seatbelt

• Using a mobile phone

• Speeding

Throughout April, we have had a force crackdown on the fatal five with a view to driving down the number of people killed and seriously injured in collisions. At the end of the month, we are releasing this footage to act as a firm reminder to all motorists to always drive with full care and attention.

Our Head of Specialist Operations, Superintendent Mick Roffe from North Yorkshire Police said: “The roads in North Yorkshire are now busier due to the warmer weather. There are also more vulnerable road users such as motorcyclists, cyclists, horse riders and pedestrians on the road which is why its vitally important that people drive safely and be more vigilant.

“Sadly, as roads policing officers we are far too familiar with dealing with fatal road traffic collisions.

“They are heart-breaking for the family, other motorists involved, the local community and responding emergency services staff who witness the tragedy and subsequent aftermath – all made worse knowing that many could have been prevented.

“We have had a real focus over the last month on the fatal five, moving forward we will continue doing all we can to spread these life saving messages. Day in day out across all corners of the county we are engaging with as many road users as possible, advocating road safety, and where necessary enforcing road traffic legislation.”
