Bordesley Green: Weekly Crime updates

From this week we will be starting a weekly crime update for incidents in the area with prevention advice on incidents that we can talk about. These should include any theft offences, burglary, robbery, disorders and ASB. This is so you can keep informed on what is happening. On top of this we will share updates from any meetings such as our virtual drop in session or cuppa with a coppa.

Any feedback would be useful

Thefts from motor vehicles

This week we saw two incidents of vehicles being searched and items stolen. These have both been on Heybarnes Road whereby a van has been broken into and tools stolen whilst another vehicle has had a dash cam and other belongings taken. It is key that any belongings and valuables are not left on show or in vehicles over night. These act as an incentive. On top of this you should ensure your vehicles remain locked and secure. If anybody has a keyless start vehicle then ensure all keys (including the spare) are kept in a faraday bag. These can be purchased online and at most retailers.

Theft of motor vehicles

There has been a rise in vehicles being stolen across Bordesley Green this work. We are working with partners on this, particularly around Heartlands Hospital.

Within Heartlands this week, we have seen the theft of 2 motor bikes both a BMW and a Vespa.

In the surrounding areas on Little Bromwich, a further 4 cars have been taken. These being a Skoda Fabia, Vauxhall Corsa, Audi Q3 and a Jaguar.

Over on Colonial Road a Toyota has been taken

On Monica Road, a Seat Ateca was taken and then over on Blakeland Street a Nissan Note was taken.

Whilst no pattern on specific vehicles, a clear denominator is most of these vehicles were keyless start. A common way of taking vehicles is using a relay to copy the signal from a key within a property. A easy fix for this is to keep all keys (Including the spare) in a faraday bag at all times. This should prevent the signal being able to be used by a relay. Faraday bags can be purchased online and at most retailers

ASB

We are monitoring and tackling ASB in several areas at present. We will be sending out ASB surveys to these locations to be able to get further information. I would ask that these are filled out and returned as they assist us greatly.

Current reported ASB:

Botha Road

Newbridge House

Delphinium Close

Mansel Road

Kenelm Road

Norton Cresecent

Barnesville Close

Somerville Road

Caldecote Grove

Coventry Road

Muntz Street

Updates from Meetings

We have had a few virtual drop in sessions and a cuppa with a coppa in the last few weeks. In these i do get questions and queries for some of our neighbouring teams as we share a part of our patch. Those queries have been passed onto the relevant teams.

We had issues around parking and rubbish on Frankton Grove. We have attended and reported all rubbish to the council and looked at the parking. This issue seems to persist in all of the groves here such as Bedworth, Alveston and Brailes Grove. Due to the size of the Groves, parking is limited and will likely always be obstructive. Enforcement is an option but there is no alternative for people to park there vehicles unfortunately. This has already been passed to the council due to insufficient parking everywhere. Our proposed idea is to invite the residents of these Groves to a community meeting to be able to come to an agreement that works for most residents. One of our officers will send out details in due course.

Some other issues raised have been car dealers on Jenkins Street and the vehicles parked here. This has been an issue we have worked on for several months and have successfully seized over 70 vehicles from around this location. This is in partnership with the Small Heath neighbourhood team who actually cover this area. For those that are curious we only cover from Heybarnes Recreation ground to Muntz Street. We often work off of our area as it is important for issues affecting our communities to be dealt with. We have worked for a number of months on the garages in Small Heath and are now passing this piece of work back to the Small Heath team for them to lead on. Where we are asked to support we will.

Speeding - We are actively working on all road offences having just recently completed a multi agency road safety operation that was quite successful. Further operations are planned along with speedwatches and a community speedwatch later this month.

Police Presence - Having worked in the area since May and being visible on foot nearly every day until January covering all roads myself, you're just not seen by everybody so it comes across as a lack of presence. Foot patrol and visibility is mandatory for the entire team and they do this daily, patrolling designated zones and plans. These does mean we cant be everywhere at once due to the size of the team. But please be aware, this is something we all agree on and have been doing since May 2024. As the supervisor i look at where our issues are reported and around 80% of that is community lead, so where our community tell us there is a problem. If there is an issue in your area, tell us and we will be there. A priority for me is improving the relationship we have with our community and often if you look at our social media or our newsletters, if an issue is reported to the Bordesley Green neighbourhood team, we will be there and we will work to fix it. 90% of the time, we are there on the same day it was reported and sometimes within minutes.

Meetings at schools - We already work with all primary schools in our area, educating the children and will attend most parents mornings that we are invited to. Some have asked around secondary schools to keep parents informed. We have dedicated schools officers for all secondary schools. I would get in touch with your secondary school and see if this something they can offer. I will also raise it to our schools officers.

There was an ask for flyers advertising how to get in touch with the team. I have contacted our corporate comms department and requested these.

We will invite all local councillors to all meetings also

If anybody has any feedback for the team, any issues (Please dont report crime via twitter or our email - This should go through 101 or 999 in an emergency) then please get in touch via Bordesleygreen@westmidlands.police.uk or follow us on X (Twitter) @BordesleyWMP

Thank you
