Police Notice: Dog Safety in Hot Weather

We would like to remind all dog owners that walking dogs during periods of extreme heat can be dangerous and even life-threatening for your pet.

Please avoid walking your dog during the hottest parts of the day as hot pavements can burn their paws, and they are at risk of heatstroke.

Please follow these important guidelines:

  • Avoid walking dogs when temperatures exceed 20°C (68°F), especially during peak hours (11:00am. – 1600pm), pavements can become scorching and may burn your dog’s paws.
  • Walk dogs early in the morning or later in the evening when it’s cooler.
  • Always carry water for your dog and watch for signs of heatstroke — excessive panting, drooling, weakness, or collapse.
  • Temperatures between 23°C - 27°C extreme caution should be taken especially with dogs that are large, obese, flat-faced/brachycephalic dogs and very young.
  • Never leave your dog in a parked car, even for a few minutes, in warm weather, car interiors can reach deadly temperatures (over 40°C / 104°F) within minutes, even with windows cracked.
  • Let’s keep our pets safe and prevent unnecessary emergencies this summer.
