To effectively investigate shoplifting and apprehend offenders, it's important for the staff who work in the stores to know how to provide us with the best information to assist us.

The Safer Neighbourhood Team identified this and worked with local stores to increase the quality of reports when describing the offence and suspects. They explained how important it is for staff to know how to access and provide CCTV, itemised receipts of what was stolen and to provide a supporting statement. All of this helps officers identify patterns and individuals and can eventually lead to arrests.

We know shoplifting has a significant impact on businesses and can leave shop staff feeling fearful and vulnerable. We aim to approach every investigation with care and service at the forefront of our minds. This forms part of our commitment to tackling retail crime. You can read more about our strategy by clicking the link in the comments.

If you are concerned about shoplifting in your local area, you can report a non-urgent crime by visiting our website. You can also make an anonymous report to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. If you see a crime in progress, call 999.

In case you missed this from the weekend.

Earlier today, we made you aware of an ongoing investigation to locate a man in his 30s who went missing from Rough Rew in #Dorking. This followed a concerning video where he appeared to be forced into a car by two men in balaclavas.

Our dedicated investigation team has been relentless in pursuing all possible enquiries, with support from specialist officers across the Force. We are now able to update that we have safely located the man involved and he has been taken to hospital for assessment. He is not believed to have sustained life-threatening injuries.

Five men and three women have been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to kidnap and linked offences. They have all been remanded into custody.

Senior Investigating Officer Detective Chief Inspector Gareth Hicks: “Since we received the report yesterday, officers across Surrey Police have been working tirelessly to bring this man safely back to his family. We now have eight people in custody and there is not believed to be any wider threat to the community.

“Our investigation continues to understand the full circumstances of what happened, and we would still encourage anyone who has information to please come forwards.

“We know this has been a distressing time for our local community and officers will remain in the area this evening, so please speak to us if you have any concerns.”

If you were in the Rough Rew area between 12pm and 12.30pm on Saturday, 26 April, or have any CCTV, dashcam, or doorbell footage that may be relevant, please contact us quoting reference PR/45250049386.
