Sussex Alerts Monthly Bulletin - April 2025

Sussex Alerts- Brighton & Hove Police

Wednesday 30th April

...And just like that, April is over! It’s a cliche I know, but the year is flying so far!

We have had the weather mostly on our side this month and have been out and about in the city meeting lots of you.

Brighton Marathon

The beginning of the month saw over 15,000 visit the city to take part in the Brighton Marathon weekend, that isn’t even mentioning all the spectators they brought with them! Our officers spent some time patrolling the area, ensuring everyone had an enjoyable and safe time. If you ran, good on ya!

National Stalking Awareness Week – 22nd-27th

Stalking has a devastating impact on victim’s lives, but many people do not recognise the signs or downplay the severity of offenders’ behaviour.

We are encouraging you to spot the signs of stalking so you can report it and ultimately, keep yourself safe.

On average, victims of stalking endure 100 incidents before they recognise an individual’s behaviour as criminal. That has to change. Any fixated and unwanted behaviour could be classed as stalking. If someone’s behaviour is making you uncomfortable, scared or threatened, report it to the police.

You can read more about this here - Spot the signs of stalking this National Stalking Awareness Week | Sussex Police

Op Downsway

Our annual summer road safety campaign, Op Downsway, is up and running again and you may have noticed an increased presence on Sussex’s Road across the county.  It will run through to September.  The campaign is designed to deter dangerous/anti-social driving and we will take enforcement action where necessary. Please ensure you drive responsibly, considerately and safely.

We have many engagement events planned for the forthcoming months, especially now the weather is (hopefully) improving and the daylight hours are longer. We will post details of any upcoming events on our Facebook (Brighton & Hove Police) page and via Sussex Alerts bulletins.

That’s it for now, catch up in May!

Information and advice

 Is your bike safe?

Now the weather is starting to warm up, you might want to start using your bikes to get out and about and enjoy the city!

We would like to remind owners to ensure they lock their bikes up, preferably to a stand (or similar) and to use at least 2 good quality locks.

You may only be popping into a shop for a minute, but it only takes seconds for someone to grab an unlocked bike and cycle off.

Home security

You might be starting to think about going away in the upcoming half term or summer holidays.

This is coming up to a rather busy time for the burglars, who are very happy that everyone is planning on leaving their homes for a week or two!

Follow these tips to help keep your home safe while you're away:

- Make sure all access points are secured (doors, windows, gates) and activate any external security lighting that you may have
- Lock and remove the keys from windows and doors and put them in a safe place when you leave the house
- Ask a trusted neighbour or friend to collect post, open and close curtains
- Ensure gardening equipment, tools and ladders are put away and securely stored. Don't leave them lying around in your garden as they could aid burglars
- Ensure that any sheds and outbuildings are locked and secured. Use good quality locks on garages and sheds (ensure screws on latches and hinges cannot be undone easily from the outside) and where possible ensure that they are alarmed
