We have received an increase in reports around road users using mobile phones whilst driving. Below is some information around the topic, and why you should not use a mobile phone whilst driving:

In 2022, 22 fatalities and 674 injuries were reported in road traffic collisions where mobile phone use was a contributory factor.

Additionally, 4,188 injuries were recorded in incidents involving "distraction in vehicle," which may include mobile phone use.

Using a mobile phone while driving in the UK is both dangerous and illegal. Here are some key reasons:

Safety Risks: Drivers using mobile phones are less aware of their surroundings, fail to see road signs, and are more likely to make errors like tailgating or entering unsafe gaps in traffic.

Slower Reactions: Reaction times are significantly reduced, leading to delayed braking and increased chances of accidents.

Legal Consequences: It's illegal to hold and use a mobile phone while driving. Offenders can face a £200 fine, six penalty points, or even lose their licence if they are new drivers.

Severe Penalties: In court, drivers can be banned from driving and fined up to £1,000—or £2,500 for lorry or bus drivers.

The law applies even when stopped at traffic lights or in traffic jams. Hands-free devices are allowed, but drivers must remain in full control of their vehicle. It's all about keeping everyone on the road safe!
