Sussex Alerts Monthly Bulletin - March 2025

Sussex Alerts- Brighton & Hove Police

Monday 31st March 2024

As we bid a fond farewell to March and the few sunny days we were treated to, we wait in hope that April doesn’t bring the usual many showers!

We have been busy as always, so let me fill you in on some of the goings on this month.

Youth work at colleges in the city

Our brilliant youth team have been engaging with collages around the city again this month, speaking with the students. This month the visited Cardinal Newman College, Varndean College, as well as meeting with the younger students in they city and Hungry Minds nursery.

This is extremely important work that our officers enjoy being involved with.Through focusing on fostering positive and healthy relationships with the students in the city we can let them know we are here to support them and help to keep everyone safe.

Business Crime Reduction Partnership Awareness Week

Brighton & Hove Police are proud to work closely with Brighton and Hove Business Crime Reduction Partnership to support the businesses in the city.

Earlier in the month, I took to the streets and completed a joint patrol along with PCSO Browning through St James's Street and the surrounding areas. We spent our time engaging with local businesses including Sainsburys, Morrisons and The Flower Shop. We also visited the new Reading Room at Black Rock where we spoke about working in the community together and the plans for the future

In additon to the above, we have carried out a wide variety of work throughout the entire month which has included high visibility patrols, proactive activity against known offenders and crime prevention messaging.

ASB (anti-social behaviour) can impact everyone and anyone, including businesses across the city, and our partnership patrols aim to directly deter and tackle ASB in Brighton & Hove.

We want to encourage the businesses across the city to report crime to us swiftly and to make contact with us to keep communication channels open. We can arrange for a PCSO to visit and discuss any issues you are facing and ensure we put support in place where it is needed.

The BCRP is here to offer support to businesses in Brighton & Hove and you can find out more about the fantastic work they do and how they can help your business here: Brighton Crime Reduction Partnership (BCRP) | Business Safety & Crime Prevention

Night Safety Marshalls are back!

Night Safety Marshals are back on duty on Friday and Saturday nights.

They are highly trained, qualified in first aid, and are able to escort those who need it, to a place of safety. In addition, they are in direct contact with police and can request support from us at all times.

That’s all for now, I'll be back for the April update!

Si Marchant

Chief Inspector

Information and advice

🚲 Is your bike safe?

Now the weather is starting to warm up a bit, you might want to start using your bikes to get out and about and enjoy the city!

We would like to remind owners to ensure they lock their bikes up, preferably to a stand (or similar) and to use at least 2 good quality locks.

You may only be popping in to a shop for a minute, but it only takes seconds for someone to grab an unlocked bike and cycle off.

Protect Your Trade Vehicle 🛻

Trade vehicles are often a target for opportunistic thieves. Losing your work vehicle—or the tools inside—can have a huge impact on your ability to earn a living.

To help keep your vehicle and tools safe, here are some simple steps you can take:

-Park Smart - Always park in well-lit, secure areas.
-Lock Up - Double-check that your vehicle is locked—it’s easy to forget when you’re busy!
-Mark Your Property - Clearly mark your tools and valuables. This makes them harder to sell and easier to trace.
-Install a Tracker - A GPS tracker can help locate your vehicle if it’s stolen
-Use a Steering Lock - A visible deterrent like this can make thieves think twice.

Report non-urgent information to us online or by calling 101. In an emergency or if a crime is in progress, always call 999.

Home security

Don't let burglars spring forward!🔐 ☀️

As we move to British Summer Time, lighter evenings can bring a false sense of security. Opportunistic burglars are always on the lookout, so take a moment to check your home security 🏡

Prevention is the best defence against burglary:

- Keep ladders inside locked sheds and out of sight
- Don't advertise you're away on social media
- Don't leave keys under plant pots or doormats
- Keep valuables away from windows
