Each week we get many abandoned calls from members of the public, (Not just to the Police, but also Fire and Ambulance Service), some of which are malicious others being accidental. 

If you do ever accidentally dial 999, please do not just hang up and ignore the call taker, stay on the line and confirm that it was accidental. The call taker will be absolutely fine to talk to you and will ask you several question to ascertain whether you are OK. If you hang up, they will then have to make efforts to re contact you, wasting valuable time. 

This could be very valuable information to pass on to children and grandchildren so they don't panic.
