Egg throwing by youths an offence?

There have been several reports recently of youths throwing eggs at houses, passing cars and windows of businesses.

Please can I ask all businesses in the area to be vigilant when youths are attempting to purchase eggs from them. Whilst there is no age restriction on the purchase of eggs, the whole community can have an impact in stopping these incidents by using common sense. Many shops in other areas have employed a no sale to under 16's policy.

Patrols will also be in the area and will stop check youths hanging around areas where these incidents have taken place.

These incidents can absolutely constitute an offence of criminal damage and what may seem like a prank to some, can and will lead to arrests and criminal prosecution. If youths are searched and found to be in possession of eggs without a reasonable excuse, there is also possibility of prosecution of having articles in your possession to commit criminal damage.

Parents please take responsibility of knowing where your children are and speak to them regarding what the ramifications of being involved in such “pranks” may be.

Due to the distress caused to residents by these incidents, we will be working proactively, with the community to identify those involved.

Regards
