Inspector Perry Blog![]() IntroductionWe have had another busy period across the Harborough district and Oadby, Wigston and South Wigston area. Some great proactive work has been done this month. We received information from bank security that a male had been acting suspiciously around cash point ATMs in Market Harborough town. We deployed undercover officers to the area and arrested Bodgan Gasparov who was in the process of utilising a cash trap device. He was interviewed and charged with attempt theft, possession of articles for use in fraud, and acquiring criminal property. He was charged and remanded into custody for trial later in the year.
We were called to HMP Gartree following reports of a suspicious item located. Some swift work between the prison, police, fire service and local resilience forum meant we were able to quickly identify the package was not of concern and return residents back to their homes.
We hosted a Parish Councils event at Force headquarters. It was a great opportunity for Parish Councillors who are all volunteers in their community to meet their local police officers and other policing units like the rod safety unit to discuss how we can work together effectively on the issues that really matter to the villages and communities.
We have started to see the court results coming through following Operation Flux over the Christmas period whereby many drivers were caught driving over the legal limit. Sentences have included driving bans, hours of unpaid community work, attendance at drink driving awareness courses and fines in excess of £400.
Crime prevention events have been held across the districts with items available that are funded by the community safety partnership, and our PCSOs have delivered personal safety and crime prevention talks to several communities and beat surgeries have taken place across the area which provides a chance for you to speak with your local PCSOs.
Lastly, I had the privilege of attending some Iftar events across our area. Attending these events allows us to build trust and strengthen relationships with our community, experiencing cultural traditions in a welcoming environment. I very much enjoyed both events I attended with the South Leicestershire Islamic Community and the Dialogue Society.
Much of the work carried out to keep residents of the district safe happens behind the scenes and often on a screen, so you may not always see the officers on a daily basis, but it does not mean they’re not working hard to keep you safe.
#YouSaid - What matters to youRoad Safety – each month through neighbourhood link our community members tell us about their top priorities for their area through surveys. Consistently road safety and speeding are voted as the top priority. As such, this month officers have conducted #Fatal4 operations targeting the four main causes of road fatalities: speeding, use of mobile phones whilst driving, seatbelt violations and driving under the influence. This operation aims to reduce road traffic incidents and promote safer driving habits.
Youth Engagement – through work with our local independent advisory group it was felt by our communities that school engagement work is really crucial in fostering trust in the police and educating youth about safety and legal matters. As such, our best teams have been busy visiting schools engaging with our young people and building positive relationships.
Anti-social behaviour locations – Officers have targeted their patrols in areas across the districts to maintain a visible presence, deter potential criminal activity, and foster the community relationships we have been busy building. Hundreds of hours have been spent by our PCSOs on foot or in vehicles patrolling in key areas for speeding and ASB which are most identified as a priority for residents.
