Weekly update from the South Yardley Neighbourhood policing team.

Dear Members,

Here’s a quick round up from the South Yardley neighbourhood policing team.

What’s been happening

  • International Women’s Day: Happy IWD 2025!
This takes place on every year on 8th of March 2025.
International Women’s Day is a celebration of the achievements made by women over the course of history. Today, IWD appreciates the work that past heroines have completed across social, economic, cultural and political sectors and represents the continued fight for equality, to eliminate discrimination and bias between genders. It’s is a day for everybody to get involved in actively promoting gender equality and remove barriers. "The story of women's struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organization but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights." Gloria Steinem. I have been a police officer for just over two years now. Prior to that I worked as an English Teacher overseas and then worked in international marketing before taking timeout to bring up my children. So, I have joined ‘later in life’ and I would really encourage anyone thinking about joining to give it a go regardless of age. It sounds like a cliché but I can honestly say, no two days are the same and I can never predict what lies ahead for each day I come to work. I work in neighbourhood policing with a supportive and diverse team. Another great thing about being in the police is all the choices and options for progression in different areas of policing.

I have worked for WMP for 27 years, I started in 2007 as a Police Traffic Warden, this was then disbanded and I moved into becoming a PCSO. I have worked across different areas of communities on neighbourhood teams. I am currently on South Yardley and I have been here for a while now. I love my job as every day is different and it brings a different challenge each time. I have built up a varied network within the community and I have forged many friends inside and outside of WMP as a result. I have been able to build up a range of skills that are transferable to all roles I have been in and Experiences have helped me achieve many things in life and I have built up a lot of resilience as a result.

I have been a police officer coming up to 3 years. I am currently attached to South Yardley Neighbourhood Team whereby my role is varied from working directly with the community, responding to emergencies and non emergencies, executing warrants and the list goes on! I joined the police on the degree route and I am currently in the process of writing my dissertation with the hope of graduating in August 2025. I have always aspired to be a police officer to help vulnerable victims and so that I could directly contribute to the safety, well-being, and justice of others.
The work is demanding, but it’s also incredibly rewarding to know that I’m contributing to something meaningful and working toward positive change every day. The challenges and responsibilities of being a police officer inspired me to grow both personally and professionally. In a field traditionally dominated by men, it is empowering to work in an environment that fosters inclusivity, recognises diverse perspectives, and appreciates the unique contributions women bring to policing.I absolutely love my job and would encourage those who are thinking about joining the police to take the leap and go for it!!

I am now in my 3rd year as a police officer, I never thought I would become a police officer, but the more I looked into the role, the more I realised how important it was to have officers who reflect the communities they serve. Growing up, I rarely saw Muslim representation within the police force, especially women, and it made me question if this was a career I could even consider. However, I wanted to break down those barriers and show others from similar backgrounds that this job is not out of reach.

I joined with aspiration to make a difference, to be a bridge between the police and communities who might feel disconnected or misunderstood. My goal has always been to represent my community with passion, be a role model and make a real difference. I police with honesty, respect and courtesy and thrive on taking responsibility to make a real difference.

I have been working on South Yardley Neighbourhood team now for around 3 years. I have been working for West Midlands Police for 5 years this year. It is true what they say time really does go fast. In that time, I have learnt a lot and worked with a lot of changes inside and outside of West Midlands Police. One of the biggest challenges I am facing is motherhood! I wouldn’t change it for the world and I adore my little girl. I feel that she teaches me more daily than I do her, its amazing. Within West Midlands Police, I am now a member of the executive committee for Women in Policing, this has been amazing to be part of with helping fellow colleagues, supporting the organisation of events, awards etc… I am also the SPOC for VAWG on South Yardley. I have recently started a new project ‘Empowered Steps’ this is focused on a women’s only walk to support women within the community, to build their trust and confidence back with walking the streets and within our neighbourhood team.

  • Empowered Steps: This is a new project that PC Smith has put together in South Yardley. This is to help women within our community to come together and walk with us, to build their trust and confidence back with walking on our streets again. This will also help them build a rapport with the team. The walk is for only 30 minutes and it is currently taking place on Sunday 23rd March at 10:00. Meeting point will be on the pathway behind the Skatepark so everyone that needs to drive will be able to use the car park.
  • Street Watch: Are you wanting to support your community? Why not join up to our street watch programme. If you are interested please do not hesitate to contact the below details and we will get you signed up.
  • Litter Picking: New Community Litter Picking taking place on 24th March at 14:00 on Byron, South Yardley. All you need to bring is yourself. However, if you have any litter picking equipment please feel free to bring this along.
