Patrols, Police Activity and local engagement

Your local Police beat team are working with Schools and businesses in the area to address increasing complaints regarding vehicles around schools, at school times. These complaints are received from parents, residents, and staff.

Dealing with road safety requires a multi-agency approach. Due to the range of complaints, Burbage Police are seeking the support of local Schools, council, and county council to implement initiatives and solutions to support in reducing the risk to children, parents, cyclists, and motorists.

We have been working for many years to address vehicle related complaints, especially outside schools at key times. Police activity has included seizing vehicles, issuing section 59’s, patrols, challenging motorists and working with schools.

We have also tried to encourage local businesses to make car parks available for parents, supported in “walk to school initiatives”, pushed for pavement bollards, extended double yellow lines, increased traffic wardens and pedestrian areas at key times.

We currently have Burbage infants, Burbage Juniors, Sketchley Hill Primary and Hastings High School which we are looking to address in Burbage. With the population ever increasing, please support us in ensuring children are kept as safe as possible when attending and leaving school.

An example of complaints we get during the school hours which needs to stop immediately:

  • Parking in “no stop” areas to drop off children. This includes stopping in the middle of the road so children can run out.
  • Blocking resident’s driveways.
  • Driving on/Blocking footpaths.
  • Not paying due care and attention whilst driving in School areas.
  • Parents/children not utilising the lollipop man/woman and choosing to cross in dangerous areas.
  •

A lot of residents will either have attended one of the schools in Burbage or have children/grandchildren that do. We all have an interest in resolving this issue.  As we have already stated, to implement solutions, we need the support from partner agencies. Your feedback as a local resident, someone that works in the area or a parent, is greatly appreciated, and gives you a chance to have your say. Please take this opportunity.

Crime prevention and issues to be aware of

Please consider home security and vehicle security. RFID wallets, steering locks, cactus spikes and driveway bollards are a must if you have high value or high-performance vehicles.

Please report suspicious behaviour immediately and if you see a crime in progress, 999 immediately.

Other fairly local areas have suffered with vehicle thefts and suspicious behaviour believed to be linked to vehicle thefts so please be aware.

    Thank you and take care.
