Door to door sales (Nottingham Knockers)

Hello all.

Just another quick and polite reminder.

Door to door sellers must have a ‘pedlar’s certificate/licence' to do this, so if they knock at your door to sell items which are normally in a large holdall and don't produce a bonafide pedlar's certificate, then please politely decline.

There was a chap going door to door in Brookland a couple of days ago for your awareness.

Some will say that they're ex-armed forces, which they may well be, some will say they've been released from prison and doing door to door sales is part of their probation/rehabilitation (unlikely) however, it doesn't really matter what reason they give, if they haven't got a pedlar's licence, then they shouldn't be doing it and there might be a reason why they haven't applied at the local police station for one, bearing in mind the licence only costs £12.25.

Eligibility for a pedlar’s certificate

To apply you need to:

  • be 17 or over

  • have lived in the local authority where you’re applying for at least 28 days

  • How to apply

Apply for a pedlar’s certificate at your local police station. You need to take:

  • 2 photos of you

  • a form of identity, eg a passport or driving licence

  • proof of your address

  • details of a referee

  • The certificate costs £12.25 and lasts 1 year.

    Fines and penalties

You must produce your certificate if someone asks to see it.

If you work as a pedlar without a certificate - or let someone else use yours - you could be fined up to £200.

You could also get a prison sentence of up to 6 months if you either:

  • give false information when you apply

  • make or carry a forged certificate

  •

    Thank you.

    Steve.
