Bulletin 10 April 25th – May 8th 2024
We mentioned in Bulletin 8 that we have seen an increase in tool thefts across East Surrey.
As the weather gets better, you might be purchasing items off internet marketplaces or car boot sales in order to complete your DIY projects. You may think you are getting a really good deal, however could you be potentially buying stolen goods?
We recommend the following to see what you can do to make sure you are not buying stolen tools:
Make sure you are buying tools from a reputable seller
Where possible, collect tools from a house and check the initials or postcodes engraved match the sellers details.
When buying tools, make sure to take a photo of them and any serial numbers.
If you think you may have purchased stolen goods, please contact us or take them to your local police station. Do not contact the seller yourself or keep the item as you may be considered as illegally handling stolen goods.
If you suspect someone to be selling stolen goods, please report it to us.

CRIME REPORTS IN YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD
Our Neighbourhood Patrol Team and Safer Neighbourhood Team deal with a variety of incidents. Here are a few they dealt with since the last Bulletin.
There were 31 Arrests in the period April 23rd to May 5th : Domestic Abuse / Violent Domestic Abuse 5 , Criminal Damage 2 , Harassment 1 , Theft 2, Alcohol / Drug Related 4 , Drunk in charge 1 , Child at Risk 5 , Firearms 3, Violent Crime other /Public Place 3, Shoplifting 4 , Sexual Offence 1.
Following a road traffic collision in Newchapel on April 26th the male driver was arrested after failing a roadside breath test.
Following a road traffic collision in Hurst Green on May 7th the female driver was arrested after failing a drug swipe.
PCSO Pilbrow in Partnership Prevents Prolific Pilferers!*
PCSO Pilbrow has built up a close working relationship with Tesco in Caterham over the years and in recent months they have been working together to gather evidence for a group of people who have been repeatedly involved with bulk thefts at the store.
As reported in the last Bulletin on April 24th the suspects entered the store once again and were quickly identified by security. They alerted police on 999 and staff kept observations on the offenders.
As officers arrived at scene to detain one offender PCSO Pilbrow gave chase for the other offenders under the direction of staff where, using her local knowledge she was able to locate and detain 4 other females in a nearby street single-handedly whilst trying to get away in a vehicle.
There are significant other enquiries still to conduct, therefore all 5 females from Essex have been bailed with conditions whilst the investigation continues.
*We are aware that 'pilfering' would suggest 'people who steal things of little value or small quantities' however 'alleged thieving so-and-so's' wouldn't fit with the alliteration.
PCSO duties are multi-faceted and include local foot patrols to identify areas of potential concern that may be used for anti-social behaviour. PCSO Ord and PCSO Wren have identified an area in Caterham where multiple nitrous oxide canisters have been discarded and are thought to have been used to inhale the gas. (Other areas exist and are also patrolled)
Nitrous oxide is subject to the Psychoactive Substances Act 2016 and in November 2023, the law was updated making possession of the substance illegal, classifying it as a class ‘C’ drug. It is a criminal offence to be found in possession of the drug where its intended use is to be wrongfully inhaled (‘to get high’). Patrols will continue to help catch and deter offenders.
Not everything we do is about chasing down bad guys and girls, luckily the role of a PCSO gives us the opportunity to engage closely with our community, build relationships and occasionally put a smile on people’s faces.

LINGFIELD, FELBRIDGE, NEWCHAPEL AND FELCOURT
Burglary Business and Community Woodcock Hill, Felbridge. Around 06.13 April 27th the door of a restaurant was forced open, damaging the lock and a full drum of cooking oil was stolen and replaced with an empty drum (ref 45240047092).
Theft
Felcourt Road, Felcourt. Between 01.30 and 01.50 April 29th hydraulic auger was removed from an excavator and stolen (ref 45240047694).
Vehicle Crime
Brickhouse Lane, Newchapel – Theft. Between 17.00 and 21.00 April 26th rear index plate BG56EBC was stolen from a car (ref 45240047053).
Forge Close, Lingfield – Theft. Around 21.40 May 6th a Honda motorbike index FV05UWS was stolen by two males who ran off with it down the street when chased by the victim (ref 45240050809).
BLETCHINGLEY, GODSTONE AND SOUTH GODSTONE
Criminal Damage
Crescent Road, Bletchingley. Overnight May 2nd to 3rd a rear window of a house was shattered by a missile of some sort (ref 45240049453).
Tylers Close, Godstone. Around 22.31 May 5th the upstairs front window of a house was hit three times smashing the outer pane of glazing. Two small ball bearings were found by officers who attended and house to house enquiries indicate that three white males aged around 14 were involved, one of whom was wearing a blue puffer jacket. There have been a number of instances of this nature in the Godstone area over the past few weeks including attacks on wildlife. Officers are aware and there have been increased patrols in the area (ref 5240050448). Overnight May 5th to 6th tyres were slashed on two cars parked in this road (ref 45240050566/50571).
Vehicle Crime
Whitewood Lane, South Godstone – Theft. Between 18.00 and 20.30 April 26th front number plate LD17VYK was stolen from a car (ref 45240047318).
LIMPSFIELD AND HURST GREEN
Theft
High Street, Limpsfield. Between 23.59 May 8th and 00.10 May 9th BT security reported that a possible theft was ongoing from one of their manhole covers. Police attended and it was discovered that around 300 metres of copper cable had been removed between two manholes as a result of both ends of the cable being cut and then pulled out from one end (ref 45240051747).
Vehicle Crime
Pollards Wood Road, Hurst Green - Theft. Between 13.00 and 18.00 May 6th a black Abarth Fiat 500 index GJ17LCE was stolen (ref 45240050717).
CATERHAM, WHYTELEAFE, KENLEY AND CATERHAM ON THE HILL
Vehicle Crime
Montgomery Way, Kenley – Keyless Theft. Around 02.36 May 3rd a black BMW 330i MSports index G8OFR was stolen by three white males one of whom was waving a wire around in the air close to the house and probably used this relay technique to start the car and drive it off (ref 45240049451).
Spencer Road, Caterham on The Hill – Keyless Theft, Between 01.35 and 02.35 May 3rd a black Mercedes GLC index FX68VMW was stolen and the incident is probably related to the Kenley theft above (ref 45240049456).
Croydon Road, Caterham – Theft. Around 15.00 May 5th cigarettes were stolen from the rear of a van being unloaded, the suspects drove off in a white Peugeot van on cloned index plates (ref 45240050422).
Station Approach, Whyteleafe – Theft. Overnight May 6th to 7th a Hobbs coat was stolen from a car that was accessed by unknown means (ref 45240050859).
TATSFIELD AND WOLDINGHAM
Burglary Residential including sheds and garages
Southfields Road, Woldingham. Sometime between April 1st and May 2nd the padlock on the rear door of an unoccupied house was forced open and a TV and sound system stolen from within (ref 45240049592).
Ricketts Hill Road, Tatsfield. Between 11.14 and 12.17 May 6th a brick was thrown through the window of a patio door and the key in the inside lock of the door was then used to open the door. An untidy search was conducted and keys to three vehcles stolen. One of the vehicles a blue BMW index HN70CZY was then stolen. A blue Ford Fiesta Zetec was captured on CCTV near the scene at the time of the incident (ref 45240050654).
