Keyless Car Theft Crime Prevention Advice

Keyless car theft or ‘relay theft’ is when a device is used to fool the car into thinking the key is close by. This unlocks the car and allows the ignition to start. Thieves only need to be within a few metres of your car key to capture the signal, even if its inside your home. This means that even if your car and home are secure, thieves can still unlock, start and steal your car.

Keep car keys safe – when at home keep your car keys (and the spare) away from the car to disrupt communication range, avoid leaving them near your door or window.

Use a signal-blocking pouch – put the keys in the screened or signal blocking pouch, such as a Faraday Bag, always check the bag or pouch is still working every few months.

Turn off the fob’s wireless signal – wireless signals on some keyless fobs can be turned off. Lock in your manual to see if this is possible, if not, contact your vehicle manufacturer.

Reprogramme your keys – when you buy a second-hand car, this will erase the code from the car key to the car itself. Meaning a spare car key that is not in your possession can no longer be paired, leaving it susceptible to theft. Contact your local Master Locksmith Association (MLA) approved auto locksmith – www.locksmiths.co.uk/services/auto-locksmith/

Additional physical security – steering wheel lock, pedal boxes and gear stick locks, tested to Sold Secure can be an effective tool in the fight against keyless thefts, purely for the reason that it cannot compromised via technology. It’s also worth speaking to your vehicle dealership about installing an aftermarket immobiliser approved by the manufacturer.

Watch for illegal tow trucks – Thieves often attempt to lift vehicles from the street. If you see a towaway crew acting suspiciously, especially if their vehicle isn’t branded or if they’re not in uniform please report it immediately.

Parking – If you have a garage, use it to secure your vehicle in. Parking on the driveway, park as close to the property as you can.

As with any additional security for vehicles, try to purchase devices that are:

Thatcham quality assured: www.thatcham.org

Sold Secure test: www.solsecure.com

Secured by Design approved: www.securebydesign.com

Thatcham’s consumer security rating keeps drivers informed of the theft risk of new cars and assesses a new vehicle’s all-round security. This can be handy tool to check before purchasing a vehicle. You can access the information via: www.thatcham.org/what-we-do/security/consumer-rating/
