Concerns regarding herring gulls being shot in the Scarborough area

Dear Resident

North Yorkshire Police has recently had complaints of Herring Gulls being shot in the area around Norwood Street and Belle Vue Street of Scarborough. A number of birds have been found dead in local gardens/yards.

If you live in this area and have any information or any CCTV footage which may be of use in identifying the offender, please call 101 quoting the reference 12240069480.

Like all wild birds, gulls, their chicks and their nests are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. This means it's illegal to intentionally kill, take or injure gulls, take or destroy their eggs, or damage or destroy any gull nests while they're in use or being built - unless you're acting under licence.

Killing a gull without valid reason could result in prosecution under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and could result in a criminal record and a hefty £5000 fine.

I appreciate you may not live in the area mentioned above but in previous years we have had the same issue in other parts of Scarborough,  so we would like you to be aware of this issue and encourage you to contact the police if you have any concerns that somebody is shooting Herring Gulls in the area where you live.

Thank you very much
