Assault update and witness appeal

Police are investigating reported assaults in Cirencester town centre yesterday and are appealing for remaining witnesses to come forward.

At about 9pm officers responded to reports of a fight involving several people outside licensed premises in Castle Street, Cirencester. Two victims have come forward providing evidence that they were punched to the head and to their back by an assailant.

A short time later, at about 9:20pm, further calls to the Police were made about assaults in Gloucester Street, Cirencester in between the junctions with Spitalgate Lane and Barton Lane. Officers arrived and arrested a twenty-nine year old Cirencester man on suspicion of assault. The suspect was taken to Compass House Police Station and has been interviewed today in relation to both incidents.

The suspect has been released on Police Bail to enable further inquiries into the incidents. While on bail he has conditions not to contact those victims and witnesses who have come forward. He also has a curfew requiring him to remain indoors at his home address between 7pm and 7am daily.

Local officers have secured statements from various witnesses known to have been involved but some other potential victims or witnesses have yet to come forward. We would like to hear from these people or any local people who have CCTV evidence from the area.

Around the time of the assaults in Castle Street one of the victims had her purse stolen. This was later recovered in the Brewery Car Park but cash from within was found to be missing. If you saw someone acting suspiciously in the car then we would like to hear from you too.
