I wanted to provide you with an update regarding burglary, which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey. I hope you are well.
Just to inform everyone, what we call "Burglary season" is unfortunately coming along. With the winter days closing in, daylight being shorter and everyone stocking up for the Christmas holiday; burglars unfortunately take advantage of this time and we will be expecting an increase of break ins over the next few months.
I don't intend to create paranoia amongst the Longlands residents but wish to come across strongly that it is very important that we all do what we can to help prevent this as a community.
If we can ensure all doors and windows are locked when not in the house as a empty house can be seen as an invite for the wrong type of people to come in and grab what they want. External sensor lights, stickers on windows stating that you have alarms and CCTV can all be a slight deterrent for Criminals.
Don't worry too much as I personally aren't aware of any burglary's that occur whilst the house is occupied. Burglars hate confrontation and this goes for burglar alarms too, please make sure that if you have one, its on when your out and if you don't have one, maybe consider getting one. Burglar alarms are incredibly effective and it is incredibly rare that I've investigated a burglary with colleagues where the victim had a operating burglar alarm. Burglars will usually make a Bee line to any exit when alarms go off so tend to avoid them as a whole. Burglar alarms have gradually become more accessible online also without the need to have professional installation. This includes brands such as SimpliSafe, Ring and Yale. Self installation is easy, putting the alarms and sensors inside your house by windows and doors.
If you want to go the extra mile in the unfortunate event that you are a victim of a Burglary, marking any items that are high value to you with products such as Selectadna, Alpha Dot, Smartwater and Datatag can be very useful.
These products allow you to put a small amount of liquid onto an item which eventually hardens. This liquid is naked to the eye. The liquid is visible once put under Ultra violet lighting which when is back into police possession can be identified to the owner through unique microdot technology which can be observed under a microscope. This unique microdot tech will be linked to the owner with all of your personal details that you put on your account so that we can contact you and arrange for your items to be returned.
I hope this may come off as useful and just a little reminder for people to be aware.
Lets all work together and make it incredibly difficult for criminals to target our lovely neighbourhood. Please stay in touch with your neighbours and us, your local Police SNT if you see any suspicious activity in the attempt to prevent any criminal activity.
I hope you have a great rest of your day.
Many thanks,
PCSO Haughey.
While we will continue to pursue burglars in the area, there are steps you can do to help keep your property safe. Make sure that you: Double lock your door every time you leave the house If you can, move garden furniture or bins away from windows so that thieves cannot use them to gain access. Use laminated glass or security film on ground floor and accessible windows. Use a sash stop if you have sash windows to prevent people opening them enough to climb through. If your windows open outwards, use a key operated lock – check these are locked before leaving the house. Make sure all valuables are out of sight. Keep handbags and keys away from letterboxes or cat flaps. In the evening shut the curtains and leave lights on. Set your burglar alarm Lock your shed or garage Mark, register or record your valuables.
