Dear South Leicester Resident,


You are receiving the following email as a resident living on the Freeman Police Beat.


Have you been the victim of cybercrime, fraud or have you ever been defrauded by an online or text scam? If so, would you know who report this to and how if either you or your family or friends where the victim of a scam?


As many of you will now be doing your Christmas shopping this is the perfect time for potential scammers to take advantage of those shopping online. Please take the time to refresh yourself on best practices when buying gifts online and looking at ways and useful information on how to avoid fake and fraudulent websites.


There are numerous types and many kinds of cyber scams that you should be aware of, some of the most common are online investment scams, SMS text message scams, phishing scams and particularly at this time of the year fake shopping websites. When shopping online always double check domain names, also look closely at the website and DO NOT pay for any items via a bank transfer.


Action Fraud can help if you were the victim of a scam, Action Fraud is the UK’s national reporting centre for fraud and cybercrime where you should report fraud if you have been scammed, defrauded, or experienced cybercrime in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.


The Action Fraud website has all sorts of useful information on cybercrime and fraud including tips on ways you can prevent yourself from becoming a victim of a scam, an A-Z of the types of frauds to look out for and details on partner agencies Action Fraud collaborate with to offer additional support to victims.
