Crime prevention - Thefts from Vehicles

Due to reports of thefts from unlocked motor vehicle and reports of persons trying vehicle doors during the night in Morpeth.  We wish to provide the following information and request that it is shared with family and friends who may not on Connected.

The local Neighbourhood Officers are currently looking at these offences and potential offender(s) and will be taken appropriate action coupled with high visibility and plain clothes patrols in the identified areas.

These types of crimes are opportunist in nature and involve persons checking for vehicles being unlocked whilst checking also seeing if any money or other items have been left on display.

If the vehicle is locked and items are not left on display, then this is often enough to prevent anything further from taking place.

As such I would urge everyone not to leave money or items on display and to make sure that your vehicle is always locked and secure.

This is particularly important with keyless entry models.

Please firstly check the setting on your vehicle to make sure that any auto lock feature has been enabled and set for the shortest time. If your vehicle has the option to push in the wing mirrors when locked, then enable this to provide an easy point of refence for making sure the vehicle is locked.

Further to above make sure the key fob is a good distance away from the vehicle when in your home to make sure it continues to be locked.

For added security Faraday pouches or boxes can be bought that prevent the fob from transmitting via searches on the internet

Further information is enclosed in attachments covering the above from Northumbria Police along with other organisations and a link to further information - Car crime | Neighbourhood Watch Network (ourwatch.org.uk)
